Victory in Europe Day

Wars always begin suddenly. In 1941 the most horrible, the closest war for Russia began – the World War II. They say we could not stop the fascists without heavy losses.

Russia lost over 26 MILLION PEOPLE. 26 MILLION PEOPLE – this figure sounds like a verdict. Just imagine – it is the population of the whole country like Norway.
In Berlin operation in 1945 at the end of the War over 2.5 million soldiers and officers were involved. There were 6250 tanks and self-propelled mountings, 7500 planes. During the first day of the liberation the Red Army lost over 15 000 soldiers and officers. During the whole Berlin operation about 352 000 people were killed. The battling lasted for two weeks. The Russian army smashed 70 infantry, 12 armoured and 11 motorized divisions. 480 000 people were taken prisoner.

On the 9th of May it was announced that Germany signed the act of unconditional surrender. On the 24th of June there was a victory parade in the Red Square.

It’s difficult for us - Russian people - to remember what happened there during the World War II. Difficult to look at our miserable worn-out elderly people who had lived through it. There is almost no family in Russia who has not lost somebody – a wife, a husband, children, parents, sisters and brothers – in the World War II.

The Victory Day celebrated in Russia on the 9th of May is one of the most respected, the saddiest but at the same time the happiest holiday.

Glory, glory to the people who struggled for the sake of their country! May their memory live on forever!

Why was the number nine?

This is because the number of Army divisions was also nine.

The center of Berlin had amassed lots of technical units and many soldiers. Those were elite German SS units. Our battalion was right opposite to the Reichstag at that time. The building was stormed by the battalion of Major Davydov from the right and by battalion of Senior Lieutenant Samsonov from the left. There were just 300 meters remaining to reach the Reichstag. But the distance was an open area fired upon from every side. Together with Alexey Berest, the officer responsible for the political training of the battalion, we sent soldiers in one attack after another, but retreated each time. Two battalions on our side were also attempting to attack the Reichstag unsuccessfully. All the same, we carried out the order to seize the Reichstag building. It was on only the fourth attempt that our battalion rushed into the Reichstag at about 6:00 p.m. on April 30. We started hand-to-hand fighting with SS soldiers and the combat lasted till late hours. By midnight, the fight was fading away. As far as I understood, Hitler's troops had descended to some underground rooms. And we had a chance to catch our breath. We organized an all-round defense. All of a sudden, two guys from the regimental reconnaissance, Sergeant Yegorov and Junior Sergeant Kantaria came up with a Victory Flag.

May 9, 1945. Red Flag Over the Reichstag.

World War II, the bloodiest war of the mankind, broke out as Nazi Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. On June 22, 1941, Germany attacked the USSR, which also then included Azerbaijan. The war finished on May 9, 1945, the flag of the USSR was hoisted over the building of Reichstag in Berlin.
